Can You Paint Over Varnish? Prep Steps That Actually Work

You found a glossy, yellowed varnished treasure? Do you have to strip it? Usually no. Here’s how to paint over varnish with SeaPaint so it sticks and stays.

If varnish is sound (doesn’t flake/chip), you can paint over it.

    Prep

    • Degrease (soap & water)→ rinse → dry.

    • Wipe with Alcohol to de-gloss.

    • Add a coat of SeaGlass before painting if it's super slick. Let dry 5 minutes.

    Paint & seal

    • Apply 2 thin coats of SeaPaint with a soft bristled brush; allow 13 min between coats.

    • Seal with SeaGlass (2-3 thin coats- apply with damp, soft bristled brush))

    Bleed-through plan

    • Pink/yellow stains = tannins. Spot-prime just those areas, then continue.

    FAQs

    Will it peel?
Not if you degrease, de-gloss, and keep coats thin.
    Do I need to sand?
Hand scuffing is optional; the alcohol wipe + thin coats usually suffice.
